During the 1930s, the theatre did not produce classics at the rate the guardians of national culture would have preferred. Classics were, however, always appreciated, and their production was always approached with care. Major roles from Finnish classics were important additions to an actor’s resume. Although Artturi Järviluoma, Lauri Haarla and Väinö Syvänne were writing well into the 1930s, their drama welled up from historical landscapes. The plays of Aleksis Kivi, J. J. Wecksell and Gustaf von Numers were core works in the programming at the Finnish Theatre Company (1872-1902, later the Finnish National Theatre). Anna-Liisa was just about the only Minna Canth play to be performed in the 1930s, to great success in Viipuri.
